Join a prayer vigil each Friday morning from 7:15 am to 8:00 am at the Broadview Detention Center 1930 Beach St, Broadview, IL.
Directions: Take the 290/Eisenhower westbound to exit 25th Ave. South; turn right at the first stoplight soon after leaving the expressway (Lexington); turn left on Beach Street, but be careful because oncoming traffic doesn't have a stop. The detention center is on the right side of the road, recognizable by the flag.
We begin the prayer vigil at 7:15 and finish about 8:00. The service is essentially Catholic, but if clergy are present from other denominations, they are invited to offer a prayer as well. People come from religious communities from all other the city and, depending on the day, we have between 15 and 60 people.
The purpose of the prayer vigil is to be present in solidarity with those detained at Broadview in a very concrete way. Since Broadview is where detainees are brought to be processed before being shipped out to McHenry County Jail or Kenosha Jail; and where they return from those sites to be driven by buses to O'Hare where they are deported to Ciudad Juarez (the extremely dangerous city which is in the midst of the drug war), we invite relatives who have come to say goodbye to their family members to join us in prayer. As you can imagine, having the family unit torn asunder is a devastating experience.
